About Us
The Equal Justice Foundation (EJF) is a student-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit at the George Washington University Law School (GW Law) that empowers students to pursue opportunities in the public and nonprofit sectors. As summer opportunities in these sectors are often unpaid, EJF supports public interest law students through financial stipends. Summer financial assistance allows law students to accept internships, fellowships, or clerkships with mission, driven organizations and immerse themselves in the experience without financial hardships. Support is also given to Public interest law school graduates as they study for the Bar. EJF organizes fundraising events and activities to support crucial stipends because the public and nonprofit sectors provide critical legal services to underserved communities across the country. EJF is helping communities at large by supporting law students’ desires to apply their legal skills in different areas of the law, including environmental law, labor, human rights, judicial assistance, race equality, and poverty.
Our Success
Support for Public Interest Careers
During the 2025–2026 academic year, the GW Equal Justice Foundation proudly raised $45,000 to fund summer stipends for students pursuing careers in public interest law.
This milestone reflects the generosity of our alumni, faculty, and community partners who believe in the importance of public interest legal work and who continuously support the next generation of public interest lawyers. Thanks to these funds, GW Law public interest students were able to spend their summers gaining hands-on experience at legal aid organizations, public defender offices, government agencies, and nonprofits, without having to worry about the financial hardships that come with taking an unpaid job.
Continuing Efforts
Reaching this milestone has only motivated us to aim higher during the 2026-2027 academic year. The Equal Justice Foundation is already hard at work planning this year's fundraising initiatives, including our annual Race for Equal Justice and our annual Spring Auction Event, to ensure even more students can pursue meaningful public interest work without financial barriers standing in their way.
This year, our goal is to exceed $45,000 and expand the number of stipends we're able to award. As the need for accessible public interest careers grows, so does our commitment to meeting it. Every dollar raised goes directly toward empowering the next generation of public interest attorneys and ensuring that passion for justice determines who can pursue this vital work.
